Misfit Tom Ripley is sent to Italy to track down Dickie Greenleaf, the rich playboy son of a shipping magnate, and bring him back home to America. Ripley falls in love with la dolce vita, so when the bounder is killed in a boating accident, Ripley doesn't think twice about assuming his identity and living the good life. The plan works well until Dickie's girlfriend begins asking difficult questions.
