A dramatisation of the extraordinary true story of Louis Zamperini, who competed at the 1936 Olympic Games, survived a plane crash in his B-24 bomber during the Second World War then suffered at the hands of the Japanese in a POW camp. Behind enemy lines, sadistic commander Mutsuhiro Watanabe, who is nicknamed The Bird, sets out to break the Olympian's spirit with cruelty and intimidation.
