Drama Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter lives in the predominantly black neighbourhood of Garden Heights with her mother Lisa and attends the predominantly white private school Williamson Prep. Starr keeps these two sides to her existence separate until one fateful night she attends a party with childhood friend Khalil. On the drive home, a white police officer stops the teenagers and shoots dead Khalil. Starr is the sole witness. In subsequent news reports, Khalil is falsely portrayed as a drug dealer.
