One Child Nation

One Child Nation

7.5 out of 10

Documentary In 1980 under the leadership of chairman Hua Guofeng, China introduced the controversial one child policy: an extreme form of population control which restricted couples to having just one offspring. Thirty-five years later, the practice ended but China still bears the emotional scars of abandoned newborns, abortions and sterilisations. This documentary unearths archival propaganda material and first-hand accounts of parents, who prioritised their country's agenda over human life.
