Thriller Lemuel Childs is a pastor, who presides over an insular Appalachian mountain community, which handles poisonous snakes in sermons to warn against temptation and sins of the flesh. Lemuel's daughter Mara follows her father's teachings and is poised to marry neighbour Garrett. However, the young woman is keeping a secret from her father - she has succumbed to the advances of former church member Augie. Mara faces an agonising decision between accepting her punishment or fleeing her home.
