Young author Edith Cushing falls under the spell of impecunious British baronet Sir Thomas Sharpe and they marry. The bridegroom is charming and debonair, and conveys his blushing bride to a crumbling ancestral home atop a mountain of red clay in rural northern England. Thomas' sister Lady Lucille Sharpe also lives in the house and her lingering presence makes Edith feel uncomfortable. As the young wife comes to terms with her new surroundings, she stumbles upon dark secrets of the decaying house.
