Drama Cult leader Lancaster Dodd welcomes sailor Freddie Quell into the fold as his "guinea pig and protege" despite the warnings of his wife Peggy. She recognises Freddie as a damaged and emotionally volatile soul, with a propensity for violence, who could attract the wrong sort of publicity to Lancaster's cause. However, her husband is determined to demonstrate his cerebral might and bend Freddie to his will.
